What We Love: Sneaky Karst Caves

It's like someone flushed the lake

Did you hear the little glurp when the stick went in?

Some folks were out and about near Gold River when they found a surprise. The lake looked like it was being flushed, but only in one little spot.

They posted a video to the Field Naturalists of Vancouver Island group on Facebook to find an answer to this mystery.

According to people who know the region, the land is made up of limestone. This makes for karst terrain, which has lots of caves and underground rivers. This lake could connect to the Upana Cave system near Gold River.

The karst caves are a very cool part of life on VanIsle, and they connect lots of places from Horne Lake to Little Huson.

This little whirlpool is like a portal to VanIsle’s magical underground world. Mountains up above and caves down below!
